1. HUMOR U TIP #174 – Getting Serious About FUN

By Ann Fry

What is it with companies that just don’t “get it”? What’s their aversion to having FUN at work? You know what? I just don’t “get them!”

Everyone I interview that works for a great company puts FUN and a sense of humor at the top of their list. Here are some ideas for incorporating Fun at work:

  • Laugh walking down the hall … watch how contagious it is. Post your baby picture on the bulletin board. Spread candy bars around the place. Have a bubblegum blowing contest.
  • Take a music break — bring your guitars and jam. Have a contest to name a “mascot” for the company. Celebrate everything — birthdays, anniversaries, divorces (just kidding), births, sobriety anniversaries (kidding again), promotions, new clients, mergers, acquisitions. And, when you celebrate — eat cake, preferably chocolate!
  • Do you get the picture? The only thing in the way of having “serious fun” at work is your poor imagination. So, get together, brainstorm your ideas and have at it!!

Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy! (Send me your unusual ideas — I want to know what inspired people are doing!)

Truth: People just want to work for GREAT companies and GREAT managers. They want workplace "cultures that work." Can you say... PROFIT?

2. MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY AT WORK OPPORTUNITY

Bring in a mysterious item … maybe a funny hat or a funny saying on a pin — leave it anonymously on someone’s desk and then hide and watch them find it. See what they do with it — follow them around. Watch them smile!

3. MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS

Since humor, laughter and FUN are our game, we LOVE movies as a source for those feelings. So, whenever we see a movie that we think is really fun or silly or otherwise worthy of recommendation, we'll cover it here. Movies, by the way, are great "therapy" — a great way to get away from stress and the busy world.

  • Finding Neverland — the story of how Peter Pan was developed. Johnny Depp is amazing and the story is delightful!
  • In Good Company — a little “comedy” of sorts about how a young man usurps a middle-aged man's job and then “takes up” with the man's daughter … all’s well that ends well!
